Chickens Done Right

When you start with question: "what is best for the chickens?" the decisions about how to raise chickens become simple. We believe that chickens deserve to be treated with respect. There are several key differences in the way we raise chickens that sets us apart. We strive to raise chickens in the healthiest, happiest way possible.

We hatch the eggs ourselves

In addition to giving our kids an understanding of the cycles of life, hatching eggs in house provide benefits to the chickens. It allows us to avoid unnecessary routine antibiotic inoculations that are given to eggs in commercial hatcheries. It also means that the newly hatched chicks avoid the stressful journey from hatchery to farm.

We raise both hens & roosters

When roosters hatch, they are not killed, despite being unnecessary for egg production. We raise them for meat so the life of the rooster isn't wasted. They grow more slowly than broilers (meat birds), but the flavour is richer. We also keep some roosters as they play a valuable social role in the flock, and are essential for producing future generations.

Raised nomadically on pasture

Above and beyond simply free ranging our chickens; we raise our chickens nomadically on pasture. This is the best, healthiest way to raise chickens. It ensures they have access to clean forage, where they can eat bugs and greenery as they wish, behave naturally, and regularly

Valued to the end

A sad truth about farming chickens is that they all have one bad day. We strive to make it their only bad day in an otherwise happy life. But even when this day comes, this day is as stress free and pain free as possible. When a chicken's days are over, they aren't simply disposed of.  All chickens are also used for meat.
